PM Modi to Address Rally in Mathura Today, First of BJP's 200 Rallies to Mark One Year in Power

\
NEW DELHI:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin his party's celebration of its first year in power at the Centre with a public rally in Chandrabhan, a village in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura, 160 km from national capital Delhi.

The choice of Chandrabhan - where 3000 policemen and commandos have been deployed today and heliports for three choppers have come up overnight - is loaded with symbolism. It is the birth place of Deendayal Upadhyay, an ideologue of the Jan Sangh, from which the BJP sprang.
Deendayal Upadhyay propagated integral humanism - "antyodaya" or the rise of the last man in the queue - and today's rally is seen as a signal from the Prime Minister that the government is pursuing inclusive growth with the poor at the centre of its policies.

PM Modi had ridden a huge wave to victory last year pitching his humble background as a tea-seller on trains. In recent months however, he has been attacked by the Opposition, which has accused him of being "anti-poor" and "pro-big industry" in his reforms.

The Opposition has also alleged that in his first year in office, PM Modi has been away on too many foreign trips and has neglected to visit poor farmers whose crops were destroyed in unseasonal rain.

A strong counter is expected at today's 'Jan Kalyan' or Public Welfare rally; sources said several pro-poor policies launched in the BJP-led government's first year will be show-cased and the PM is likely to make new pledges.

This week BJP leaders will at many rallies "highlight welfare measures and policies and initiatives taken by the government for the welfare of the poor, downtrodden and farmers," Union Minister Anant Kumar said on Saturday.

The Modi government took oath on May 26, 2014, after the BJP won a majority in the national election, the country's first in 30 years.

Omar Abdullah Praises Rahul Gandhi's 'Amazing Transformation' for Taking on Modi Government

NEW DELHI:  Rahul Gandhi preferred silence during the UPA regime as "speaking his mind would have meant either being critical of the Prime Minister or his mother," former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said and termed Mr Gandhi's recent participation as an "amazing transformation".

"The Rahul who left is not the Rahul who has come back," Omar Abdullah said on the Congress vice president's aggressively stance on the Modi government.

"That's an amazing transformation. I don't know what it's down to. I haven't had the chance to meet up with him as he has been incredibly busy but I don't know where he went and what he did...
"I will try and learn what this transformation is down to, because I guess there are lessons to be learnt for myself in that as well. I just hope that it doesn't mean I have to disappear for 56 days. But it's good. Hats off to him," Mr Abdullah told PTI.

He said speaking for Rahul earlier was always going to be difficult. "For him to speak his mind would have meant either being critical of his prime minister or critical of his mother. And that was never going to be easy. And, therefore, I think his option was then to keep quiet and that allowed the perception to grow that he couldn't speak and did not know what he wanted to say," he said.

"Rahul Gandhi may have had a lot to say but he just wasn't in a position to be able to say it, which is the advantage of being in the opposition where one just gets to speak his or her mind," he said.

Mr Abdullah hoped that Rahul Gandhi will be able to sustain this momentum till the next general elections.

"The question which people are asking and I am sure he will really prove them wrong is if he will be able to sustain it. People are wondering whether this is going to be a splash in the pan... two months, three months, four months and then nothing.

"I think, from what I know of him, now that he has set his mind, this is what he will have till next general elections," he said.

Rahul Gandhi Takes a Dig at PM Modi, Says he is a 'Proud Indian'

NEW DELHI:  On the last day of his visit to his constituency Amethi, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi kept up his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"I am a proud Indian like everyone else. All of us are proud Indians," he said, taking a dig at the Prime Minister's statement in China and Korea that had drawn widespread criticism on social media. The Congress had taken exception to the remarks.

Reiterating his earlier "suit-boot Ki Sarkar" jibe, Mr Gandhi said the NDA government was not for the poor but the industrialists. "The farmers are in distress, affected by hailstorm, they have not received compensation", but the government is busy helping the industrialists, he had told the media at the Lucknow airport.
PM Modi's comments and his selfie with Chinese premier Li Kequiang had drawn barbs from the Congress.

"Earlier, you felt ashamed of being born Indian. Now you feel proud to represent the country," PM Modi had said in Shanghai. "There was a time when people used to say we don't know what sins we committed in our past life that we were born in Hindustan," he had reiterated in Korea.

At the All India Congress Committee briefing on Tuesday, former Union Minister Kapil Sibal said, "We are really pained over the remarks as no leader in independent India has ever made such a statement."

Mr Gandhi, who was on a three-day tour of Amethi - a first since he returned from his 57-day sabbatical - had alleged that his constituency was not being treated fairly.

"Representatives of all parties unanimously agreed that the Central government is not treating Amethi fairly, whether it is the PMGSY (PM Gram sadak Yojana) or the Indira Awas Yojana," he said.

The 44-year-old has accused the Prime Minister of cancelling permission for a massive food park in Amethi because of "politics of revenge".

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi

NEW DELHI:  Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to brief him about the situation in the state.

This is the first official meeting of Mr Sayeed with the Prime Minister since he became Chief Minister on March 1 and comes in the backdrop of reports of cabinet expansion in which his party PDP may get a berth.

This was followed by a meeting between Mr Sayeed and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
During the meeting with the Home Minister, Mr Sayeed briefed him about the law and order situation in the state especially the recent attacks on police forces.

Three policemen were gunned down yesterday in Shopian district by suspected terrorists of Lashker-e-Taiba.

MR Sayeed, who arrived last night, is scheduled to meet all prominent cabinet ministers to discuss issues pertaining to development of Jammu and Kashmir.

UPA Did Not Have Right Intentions, Says PM Modi

BENGALURU:  Accusing the previous Congress-led UPA regime of not having right intentions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asserted that his government was taking quick decisions to ensure faster economic development of the country.

Addressing a rally in Bengaluru on the first day of the Bharatiya Janata Party's national executive meeting, PM Modi said sometimes the intentions of a government were more powerful than its policies.

Without naming the Congress, PM Modi said his government had been facing criticism that it was following policies of the previous United Progressive Alliance government but he sought to debunk this perception.

"Whatever your policy, your intention was not right, ours is. Hence we have gone ahead in the race of development," he said.

Accusing the opposition of spreading falsehoods on the issue of black money, he said his government had taken several initiatives to curb black money including forming special investigation team and bringing a bill in parliament on illegal money stashed abroad.

Fake Cheques 'Signed' by PM Modi are Props for Congress Protest in Bengaluru

BENGALURU:  Congress activists today protested with fake chques as the ruling BJP began a two-day leadership meet in Bengaluru today.
Hundreds of youth Congress workers held up cheques worth Rs. 15 lakh made out to "Every citizen of India", as they targeted the BJP on black money.
The cheques, showed as "signed" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, derided his promise to bring back crores in untaxed or black money illegally stashed in foreign bank accounts.
A large number of police personnel tried to stop the protesters gathered outside the venue of the BJP meet.
PM Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and several other senior leaders are attending the national executive meeting, where the party's strategy for expansion and state polls will be discussed.
The Congress has accused the ruling party of reneging on the promises it made during the national election last year.
